1,100 Warrington homes plan for Omega

THE Government wants Warrington to deliver 1,100 new homes at the Omega development site west of the town.

In a statement the council said a Government-appointed inspector made the proposal after scrutinising Warrington’s local plan – the framework for development over the next 15 years.

Large parts of the 575-acre site, the former Burtonwood airbase, have been earmarked for industrial space by the developer Omega Warrington – a joint venture between Miller Developments and Royal Bank of Scotland-owned KUC Properties.

The Government wants housing at Omega rather than on land at Appleton, Grappenhall Heys, Pewterspear Green, and Peel Hall where campaigners have been fighting development proposals for some time. The council said it had identified these areas as contingency sites in case not enough new homes were delivered on brownfield land within central parts of the town.

The plan has now gone out to public consultation which runs until September 30. All consultation documents are available on the council’s website, with copies also available in all Warrington’s libraries, the contact centre on Horsemarket Street and New Town House on Buttermarket Street.

All responses to the consultation will be considered by the Government inspector who will set out his conclusions in a report later this year.

Council leader Terry O’Neill said: “The adoption and finalisation of the Local Plan has moved a significant step closer. The need for changes following the examination hearing sessions is a routine part of the process.

“I genuinely believe that those which we have agreed with the inspector will further strengthen a robust Local Plan which delivers and supports the needs of residents and businesses and will reinforce our growth framework Warrington Means Business”.
