William Anelay completes York refurb

RESTORATION specialist William Anelay has completed the renovation of the Judges Lodgings Hotel in the centre of York.

Working with Daniel Thwaites’ Blackburn-based Shire Hotels arm, the firm carried out external renovations and internal refurbishment of the Grade I-listed building between January and May.

The works included repairing parapet walls around the roof, repointing and stabilising brickwork, repairing or replacing slate roof tiles, refurbishing sash windows and a full external redecoration.

Originally a private residence, the Judges Lodgings provided accommodation for judges sitting in the Assize Courts from 1806 until the 1970s when it became a hotel. The building is thought to have been designed by Lord Burlington and completed in 1726.

Managing director Tony Townend said: “We’re proud to have, once again, helped to preserve another piece of York’s valuable architectural heritage and we hope the hotel enjoys commercial success for years to come.”

Daniel Thwaites acquired the building for £1.5m in November 2012 from administrators of the previous owner, Judges Lodgings Ltd.

William Anelay was established in 1747 and claims to be one of the oldest construction companies in the world. It employs almost 100 staff and a turnover of £23m. Its head office is in York but it also has a Manchester office at Gorton Monastery.
