Apartments plan for Salford Magistrates’ Court

PLANS have been submitted by Liverpool’s XI Developments to convert Salford’s former magistrates building into 122 apartments.

The court, just off Chapel Street, closed in December 2011 after 171 years. All cases have now been transferred to Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

An application submitted by DK Architects in Liverpool sets outs the scheme which will have six two-bed flats and 116 one-bed.

It said: “The intention is to retain as much of the original building as possible, with any new features sensitively considered. The new elements will comprise of a new roof to the east wing of the building allowing for 23 roof top apartments with balconies set behind the existing brick walls.

“There will be a newly landscaped central courtyard with seating and planting and also covered bicycle storage.”

There will be 26 parking spaces, 11,000 sq ft of “live work units” and around 3,000 sq ft of office space. No one at DK was available to discuss the plans.

The Grade II-listed building was constructed in 1825 as the old town hall and became a court in 1840.
