Number One Riverside clinches Building of the Year

NUMBER One Riverside, a new office block in Rochdale, has been named as Greater Manchester’s Building of the Year.

The 160,000 sq ft building, which houses Rochdale Council staff, was chosen ahead of three other nominees: Manchester Airport’s new air traffic control tower; the Pavilion at Lancashire County Cricket Club; and ITV’s new Coronation Street production centre at MediaCityUK.

It was announced last night at a black tie dinner organised by Greater Manchester’s Chamber of Commerce’s property and construction committee at the Midland Hotel.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects and built by Sir Robert McAlpine, the £42.5m building was praised for its design and contribution to the regeneration of Rochdale town centre.

Committee chair Mike Gibson said: “Number One Riverside was chosen because of its stunning design, its high sustainability credentials, its high quality of build, its role in enabling the council to rationalise its offices across the borough and its contribution to the regeneration of Rochdale town centre.

“Rochdale should be proud of its new building that is at the forefront of design and sustainable technology and sets the standard for new office buildings across our region.”

Last night also saw the inaugural Construction Apprentice of the Year Award presented to 19-year-old Amari Knott from Moss Side, who is an electrical apprentice at City South Manchester Housing Trust. Three other apprentices were presented with Highly Commended awards: Declan Tighe, electrical apprentice at Keepmoat; Louis Tyson, roofing apprentice at New Charter Housing Trust; and Ashley Davies, building services and project management apprentice at Kier.
