Langtree completes 1,600-acre Carrington deal

NEWTON-le-Willows developer Langtree has completed its acquisition of Shell’s 1,600-acre Carrington site in Greater Manchester.
The firm, led by John Downes, was in competition with St Modwen and Manchester-based Peel Group after making the shortlist from around 20 bidders. Langtree’s bid was selected in September.
The site, close to the M60, is said to be the largest brownfield redevelopment in the North West, and one of the largest in the UK.
The former chemical works is designated in Trafford Council’s core strategy for a mixed-use development with 1,560 new homes and 185 acres for economic development.
Langtree is owned by Bill Ainscough whose other interests include property investment firm Himor and housebuilder Wainhomes. It is understood to have paid £20m for Carrington.
Mr Downes said: “We’re looking forward to working in partnership with all stakeholders to identify how best to evolve, modernise and develop the site to maximise the opportunity it presents. Shell has been a fine custodian of the estate and we shall continue that tradition whilst focusing our attention on ensuring that the property offer is advanced.
“In the meantime, it’s business as usual for all occupiers of the estate and we’re looking forward to having a mutually successful relationship with them going forward.”
Jones Lang LaSalle advised Shell while Langtree was advised by WHR Consulting.
