Jobs at risk at Tangerine Confectionery

BLACKPOOL sweet maker Tangerine Confectionery is planning redundancies after carrying out a review of the business.

Tangerine employs around 350 people at its headquarters in Blackpool as well as a marshmallow manufacturing site in Liverpool and four factories in Yorkshire, at York, Cleckheaton and two factories in Pontefract.

It has started a 30-day consultation process with staff.

In a statement it said it would try and avoid compulsory redundancies by finding other opportunities within the group for those affected and offering early retirement.

Chief executive Graham Hunter said: “It is with regret that we have to make this announcement so close to Christmas. Tangerine Confectionery must ensure that it operates as efficiently as possible to meet the demands of today’s market and to safeguard the long term future of the company and its workforce. Our primary concern at this time is the welfare of our staff affected by the consultation and we will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time.”

The company, which is owned by the US private equity firm Blackstone, has the Butterkist brand, Barratt wine gums, Henry Goode soft liquorice and Princess marshmallows. Its range also includes Wham bars, Highland Toffee, travel sweets brand Smith Kendon and York Fruits.
