Co-op plans sports pitches at NOMA

THE Co-operative Group is planning to turn a car park into two sports pitches as part of its NOMA regeneration scheme.
In papers filed with its planning application the Co-op said the move was part of its plan to establish NOMA as a “new neighbourhood”.
The pitches will occupy part of the Co-operative Insurance Services car park on Miller Street. It will be the first such space in the city centre.
The planning statement said: “In the short-term it is important to generate interest and activity within NOMA to start to establish it as a new neighbourhood.
“Temporary and short-term uses are an important factor in establishing this new neighbourhood and will include pop-up retail units, event and activities. The proposed sports pitches are part of this short term strategy and will be operational for 3-5 years.
“It is our intention to carry out construction work throughout February and March 2014, with a view to opening the pitches to the public in early April 2014. The pitches can be used for a wide variety of sports, such including football, rugby and circuit activities. They are also aimed at a wide range of users including local employees, schools, and existing sports clubs in the community.”
The NOMA scheme will see the redevelopment of a number of former Co-op Group buildings and land holdings across a 20-acre site north of the city centre.
