Scarborough to extend Middlewood Locks permission

SCARBOROUGH Development Group is seeking a planning extension on a 2.5 million sq ft mixed-use scheme at Middlewood Locks in Salford.

Scarborough acquired the 21-acre site in 2012 from Grant Thornton which was administrator to former owner Valley & Vale Properties. The deal was reported to be worth £10m.

Other than a block of flats close to the Manchester to Liverpool railway, the site, which sits across the River Irwell from Castlefield, is currently empty and grassed over.

If the development comes to fruition it will represent a major new district with a collection of commercial and residential buildings, including three towers of 25, 24 and 32 storeys. Manchester’s tallest building, the 47-storey Beetham Tower.

The plans include 1.5 million sq ft of residential, 700,000 sq ft of commercial space and 300,000 sq ft of leisure and retail.

Council officers have recommended the permission is extended for a further three years when Salford’s planning committee meets on April 3.

Scarborough, which has its head office in Scarborough, is owned by Kevin McCabe, who also has a stake in Sheffield United.
