Bardsley wins £6.7m student scheme

BARDSLEY construction has won a £6.7m contract to convert the former Salford Magistrates’ Court into 125 apartments.

The court, just off Chapel Street, closed in December 2011 after 171 years. All cases have now been transferred to Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

Liverpool-based X1 Developments won planning permission for the conversion last year.

Tameside-based Bardsley said it will maintain historic features such as ceilings, timber panelling, a first floor library and the external façade. Work will start this month and is due for completion in August 2015.

Ged Rooney, procurement director at Bardsley Construction, said: “Our partnership with X1 Developments will allow us to bring a new lease of life to an historic, landmark building that played a key role in Salford for almost 200 years.”

Melissa Green, head of operations at X1 Developments, said: “We are pleased to be working on our third project in conjunction with Bardsley Construction with both parties sharing the joint aim of delivering high quality modern living residences whilst respectfully refurbishing the former Salford Town Hall and Magistrates courts.  The development provides X1 with the ability to extend its portfolio into Manchester within an area of rapid rejuvenation.”

Bardsley has already completed a 160-bed student accommodation block at Arndale House, Liverpool for X1 and is working on a 109-bed student development in Chapel Street, Salford, with the company.
