Frank Whittle reveals blueprint for Preston’s Guild Hall

DESIGN and architecture practice the Frank Whittle Partnership has unveiled its vision for Preston’s Guild Hall after a £1m plus makeover.

FWP, which is based in the city, is working with the iconic building’s new owner – Lancashire businessman Simon Rigby – to transform the exterior of the entertainment and leisure venue.

Mr Rigby’s the Villa Group has been named as preferred bidder by Preston City Council.

FWP’s team is now in discussion with council planners over its proposals and is looking to submit a planning application next month for the proposed remodelling of the Guild Hall’s frontage.

The blueprint includes the creation of a striking new entrance, a modern atrium, new spaces for cafes and breakout spaces, a giant high-level digital screen and the use of cutting-edge lighting.

A giant, glowing colour-changing “G” would also form part of the new entrance.

There would also be digital projections on the pavement outside and the possibility of a digital walk of fame is being explored.

The existing trees in front of the building would also be replaced “with more subtle and softer landscaping”.

FWP says the aim of the proposed makeover is to give the venue a “modern and contemporary” outlook.

Seb Salisbury, the FWP architect behind the vision, said: “We have been working with Simon Rigby’s team to give the Guild Hall a much-needed makeover.

“The Guild Hall is in desperate need of modernisation, along with a clear and concise business plan and marketing strategy which he is now providing. We believe the design proposals we have come up can add a real longevity to the building and make it a real destination venue for Preston and beyond.

He added: “The first floor balcony of the building is underused, certain areas are uninviting and potentially intimidating and there is a lack of a defined entrance area.

“Our plans address all these issues, and will create a striking new frontage with character, charisma and a modern outlook. It will draw people into the Guild Hall.”
