Delta to launch Manchester – New York service

DELTA Air Lines is launching a new direct daily service from Manchester to New York in June next year.

It will be the third airline offering daily flights to the US city after American Airlines and United Airlines.

Delta said the service was part of a joint venture with Virgin that involves the swapping of some services.

Virgin will operate Delta’s daily service from Manchester to Atlanta and Delta will take one of Virgin’s Heathrow to New Jersey routes.

Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s senior vice president for Europe said: “The UK is a key market for us and building our connections to the United States is a top priority. Our partnership with Virgin Atlantic continues to grow and is focused on improving services while offering more destinations and schedule choice for our customers.”

Ken O’Toole, chief commercial officer at Manchester Airports Group (MAG) said: “Manchester Airport is delighted to welcome the news today about the strength of Virgin Atlantic and Delta’s partnership having a positive effect here in the North West.

“The agreement will see additional capacity on our route to Atlanta, which will now be taken over by Virgin Atlantic using a larger Airbus A330. Atlanta is a key route for Manchester, being one of the world’s largest hubs so offers incredible on-ward connectivity.

“Plus the additional MAN-JFK service operated by Delta now gives Manchester Airport three daily flights to New York. This clearly showcases the increasing need and demand for direct travel between Manchester and New York, which is testament to our ongoing ‘Fly Manchester’ campaign.”
