Salutation reopens after revamp

HISTORIC Manchester pub The Salutation has reopened after a £235,000 investment.

The pub, on the corner of Boundary and Higher Chatham Streets, was bought by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2011 which is building a new £10m students’ union building next door.

Formerly owned by Punch Taverns it was leased by Manchester pub operator Trof but will now be run by the students’ union.

The Salutation is one of only two pubs in the city with original 1840s decor, the other being the Britons Protection. It also has a blue plaque marking a nearby site where Charlotte Bronte started writing Jane Eyre while staying in Manchester with her father in 1846.

Students’ union president Mike Palmer said: “This is a landmark pub with a lot of history and we believe it is an important asset to our campus and the wider community.”
