Nanoco partner to step up production

NANOCO’S business partner the Dow Chemical Company is preparing to build the world’s first large scale quantum dot factory in South Korea that it promises will power millions of televisions and other displays.

Manchester-based Nanoco has been pioneering the production of quantum dots – tiny fluorescent particles of semiconductor material which have the ability to emit light.

They are in demand by the makers of electronic goods because they consume less power than existing systems, and are free of heavy metals such as cadmium.

Last year it struck a deal with Dow which gave it exclusive worldwide rights for the sale, marketing and manufacture of Nanoco’s quantum dots for use in electronic displays. The factory project has triggered an undisclosed “milestone payment” to Nanoco which will also take royalties from the sale of the dots which will be marketed under the brand name Trevista.

Chief executive Michael Edelman said: “We are delighted that demand for Nanoco’s cadmium-free quantum dots is at a point where Dow will begin construction of a large-scale manufacturing plant in South Korea based on our novel manufacturing process. Under Dow’s brand name TREVISTA™ Quantum Dots, Nanoco’s technology will offer an outstanding quality of colour reproduction and set the standard for quantum dots globally.”

Dr CG Park, global business director for Dow Electronic Materials’ display technologies business, said: “Today’s announcement signals the display industry’s desire to move toward quantum dots for brilliant colour in displays, but without the use of cadmium. Anytime we can enable our customers to develop extraordinary products for a more sustainable future, it’s a win for our customers, consumers and the environment.”
