Liverpool’s Castle Street to get £2.9m revamp

WORK will begin on the £2.9m regeneration of Castle Street in Liverpool city centre on Monday.

The scheme, part of the City Centre Movement Strategy, will improve the road and pavementsand public areas with the aim of attracting private sector investment.

Liverpool City Council described it as a “sympathetic renovation” which takes into account Castle Street’s position in the conservation area and within the World Heritage Site.

The 11-month programme will involve extensive widening of the footpaths and narrowing of the road between the Town Hall and Cook Street; repaving of the street in natural York stone and granite materials; repaving the streets around the Town Hall; and creating a new bus interchange.

The scheme is being funded by the Northwest Development Agency, Liverpool City Council and Merseytravel and the contractor delivering the works is North Midland Construction.

Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: “We are delighted that this vital scheme is going ahead. Following the  works on Dale Street and Old Hall Street, in Derby Square, as well as the huge investment in Liverpool One, the Castle Street scheme is the final piece in this jigsaw.

“Castle Street is of great historical importance to our city, as the home of the Town Hall and with many fine listed buildings lining the street. It is fitting that the street itself is now regenerated and upgraded, making it more attractive to live, work and to invest in the area.”
