Santander to create 200 call centre jobs in Bootle

SPANISH banking giant Santander is to create around 200 new call centre jobs in Liverpool.

The bank, which recently pulled a proposed flotation on the London Stock Exchange, said that it is creating 400 call centre jobs nationwide at three sites in Liverpool, Glasgow and Leicester to accompany the 600 new branch-based jobs announced in July.

The bank has confirmed to TheBusinessDesk.com that half of the 400 new call centre will be based at an existing call centre site in Bootle which the bank inherited following its acquisition of the Alliance & Leicester building society.

Santander now has 22,500 staff and 25 million customers in the UK following its acquisition of Alliance & Leicester, Abbey National and Bradford & Bingley businesses. It also picked up 318 former Royal Bank of Scotland branches – 120 of which were in the North West – as part of a £1.65bn deal in August.

The bank said that the new roles were being created  as it “continues to improve its service” levels to customers.

The Communications Workers’ Union said the bank’s expansion was “welcome news for the UK banking sector.

Nigel Cotgrove, the union’s national officer representing members working for Santander, said:

“At a time when unemployment is rising and many workers in other banks, are losing their jobs it is good to see Santander investing in jobs for the future which will also help to boost customer service.”
