Warrington seeks developers to transform town centre

WARRINGTON Borough Council is looking for development partners to revitalise its town centre.

Its executive board last week agreed with plans to create a new “Bridge Street Quarter” to add a new market hall and shops as well as new restaurants and leisure facilities, such as a cinema.

The council has also said that it is planning new office accommodation for its own staff and for public sector workers in the site as a “guaranteed large scale letting” will make the project more enticing for developers.

In total, the proposed development site is 17 acres and stretches from the west side of Bridge Street to Academy Way in the east, Buttermarket Street in the North and Mersey Street in the south.

Councillor Bob Barr, executive board member for planning, regeneration and housing at the council said: “The aim of these proposals is to make Warrington town centre a high quality place to work, shop and relax for the benefit residents, business owners and visitors alike.”

The council said that it would be working to find a preferred development partner “over the coming weeks and months” to take the project forward. Once a developer has been selected, it will embark on a public consultation exercise and then submit more detailed plans for the site.
