Aldi store to bring 50 Rochdale jobs

A NEW Aldi store in Rochdale looks set to create at least 50 jobs following planning approval of a new multi-million pound retail scheme.

The project on the site of the former Carter Brothers site, close to Rochdale Town Hall, has been given the go ahead by the council’s licencing and regulatory committee.

It will include a 19,000sq ft Aldi footsore and a 1,000sq ft flexible-use retail unit as well as car parking with 113 spaces with dedicated servicing and customer vehicle access and including new areas of hard and soft landscaping.

HOW Planning acted as planning consultant for the retailer while The Harris Partnership was the architect.

HOW principal planner Daniel Brown said the “significant investment” proposed by Aldi would provide a £50,000 developer contribution towards the town centre’s public realm.

“We are looking forward to seeing this site developed after it has been vacant for more than a decade,” he said.

“The significant investment proposed by Aldi will not only enhance the visual appearance of the town centre’s western fringe, but will also create jobs and further enhance consumer choice within Rochdale’s retail food sector.”

The German-owned Aldi group has 8,000 stores worldwide and a new store is opening in the UK at an average of one a week. It is known to aggressively recruit management staff from top universities and is one of the world’s largest privately owned companies.
