Smart Motorway contractor revs up

A PLANT and equipment supplier boosted by its work on the M60/M62 Smart Motorway scheme has achieved a record turnover for its hire and sales divisions of £4.5m for the quarter ending December 2014.

Among other large projects, Bury-based Garic has benefited to the tune of £2.5m from Manchester Smart Motorways, a joint venture collaboration to improve 15 miles of the M60 and a further five miles of the M62 to the north and west of Manchester.

It is the largest infrastructure project the company has been awarded since it was founded 32 years ago.

Garic will supply a broad range of site equipment, including modular buildings, welfare unites, fuel and water tanks for use at strategic locations between junction 8 of the M60 and junction 20 of the M62 during the next 20 months.

Manufactured at the company’s head office in Pilsworth, the equipment will be used by the construction teams and members of the public who need recovery facilities.

Garic sales director Neil Richardson said: “It’s great to be working with Manchester Smart Motorways on this major road improvement project and so close to our headquarters.

“With more than 180,000 vehicles a day using this route we fully appreciate how important it is for the scheme to be completed quickly but also as cost effectively and eco-efficiently as possible.

“Our mobile welfare units are solar powered and our modular buildings are designed for roadside assembly, both of which will significantly reduce the cost and carbon footprint of the scheme.”
