TJ Hughes continues high street comeback

TJ HUGHES, the North West retailer currently on growth mode after being acquired out of administration in 2011, has opened a new store.

The Liverpool-based group has launched a 40,000sq ft shop at the Mill Gate Centre in Bury, on the site of a former Marks & Spencer store, creating 50 jobs.

The expansion is the discount homewares, elecrtricals and perfumes retailer’s 13th high street store and its fifth in the North West.

Founded in 2012, TJ Hughes had 57 shops nationwide at its peak,  but just six stores, its brand and website were salvaged by the family-owned Benross Group in August 2011.

Anil Juneja, managing director of TJ Hughes, said: “We have entered 2015 with a strong sense of optimism. The launch into Bury marks our 13th bricks and mortar store and the first of our 2015 expansion plan. This is our first store in Bury and is a strong addition to our North West portfolio, providing shoppers with the biggest brands and the biggest savings.”

Marie Gribben, centre manager of the Mill Gate Centre said: “The arrival of TJ Hughes to Mill Gate will make a huge difference to the whole town centre. Not only does it put a household name department store on the high street, increasing the choice for shoppers, but it will also create new jobs which will boost the local community.”

In the year to January 2014 TJ Hughes’ parent company, Lewis’s Home Retail, had sales of £47.3m.
