Moss Side mixed-use facility is complete

PRESTON-based Conlon Construction has completed a remodelling project to convert a leisure centre in the Moss Side area of Manchester into a mixed-use library and community facility.

The £550,000 alteration and refurbishment works were commissioned by Manchester City Council and have resulted in a new entrance and shared reception area for the centre, in addition to custom-built space for the relocation of Hulme Library. The  project took eight months to complete.

By bringing leisure and library amenities into the same building, it is hoped that local residents will be encouraged to visit both facilities.

Simon Brown, contracts manager at Conlon Construction, said: “This has been an interesting community-based project.  The multi-functional design of the building should deliver the intended spin-off of driving increasing footfall to both the library and the gym.”

Executive member for culture and leisure, Councillor Rosa Battle added: “The opening of new library on Hulme High Street brings our leisure and library facility together under one roof which means that we can offer a better and improved service to our residents.

“We hope that the improved visibility and accessibility of the leisure and library services in one building will encourage new users to each facility.”
