Moves afoot for £150m Project Jennifer

LIVERPOOL City Council has begun preparations for a retail assessment which will suport an application for part of a £150m regeneration project in the city.

This is in advance of a proposal for an extended and permanent indoor and outdoor market at Great Homer Street Market as part of St Modwen’s Project Jennifer.

Nexus Planning has been appointed to prepare the retail assessment

Referred to locally as ‘Greatie Market’, it has been in operation for more than 120 years and currently operates under a temporary planning permission. The market includes about 80 indoor and 178 outdoor stalls.

The improved market will be located in an area approved as part of the Project Jennifer masterplan.

It is is intended to deliver the comprehensive redevelopment of the existing centre and will include a new Sainsbury’s store currently under construction, new shops, new homes, a health centre, and free car parking spaces for up to 900 cars.

Project Jennifer also establishes environmental improvements and improved linkages to Everton Park.

Damien Cutting, senior planner with Nexus Planning, said: “Greatie Market is a key retail facility and an important destination for local people, as well as for those that travel from around Merseyside.

“The market is a valuable asset and Nexus will be undertaking this retail assessment in order to understand the relationship between the permanent market and other local retail centres in the area.”
