Homes and Aldi plan for Sir Paul birthplace site

PLANS have been submitted for a development of 195 homes and an Aldi supermarket on the site of the former Walton Hospital in Liverpool – the birthplace of Sir Paul McCartney.

House builder Mulbury Homes, Derwent Lodge Estates, The Riverside Group and Aldi have jointly applied for permission to build 138 houses, 51 flats and six bungalows  in addition to the 19,418sq ft store.

The proposal is to deliver a mixed use scheme for the affordable market. The Riverside Group is a national registered housing provider with a large existing stock base within Liverpool and is currently delivering a range of new housing schemes across the city.

Walton Hospital closed in December 2010 and was demolished in August 2011. The development is planned for two parcels of land to the north and south of the recently-opened Clock View Hospital.

A design and access statement for the application to Liverpool City Council has been prepared jointly by Eden Building Design, The Harris Partnership (Architects), Vector Design Concepts and JLL on behalf of the applicants.

The statement says: “Careful consideration has been given to the characteristics of the site in order to determine the appropriate locations for the residential and retail elements of the scheme.
