Lancashire chemical firm sold for £256m

LANCASHIRE research chemicals specialist Alfa Aesar has been sold by multi-national company Johnson Matthay for £256m to an American company.

Thermo Fisher Scientific announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Heysham-based manufacturuer, which has 480 employees and operates key research hubs in the US, Germany, Chine, South Korean and India.

Alfa Aesar Research Chemicals generates revenue of about £78m in 2014.

Thomo Fisher Scientific president and chief executive officer Marc N Casper said: “The acquisition of Alfa Aesar enhances our existing portfolio of chemicals, solvents and reagents to support virtually every laboratory application – from research, to drug discovery and development, to production.

“In addition, customers will benefit from greater access to these products through our extensive global commercial reach.”

The deal is expected to be finalised by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Alfa Aesar will be integrated iunto Thermo Fisher’s laboratory products and services segment.
