Names in hat for NOMA public space

THE shortlist of names for the new public square taking shape in Manchester’s NOMA neighbourhood have been announced.

Approaching 700 people submitted suggestions for the public area which is being created between the iconic CIS Tower, New Century House and Hanover near Victoria Station.

The names have been whittled down to just seven that meet the criteria – to capture the spirit of both the city and NOMA.

The seven short listed names/themes are: Cotton; Miller’s; Pioneer; Turing; Mayes; Sadler’s and Makers.

How the space is defined – be it a Square, Place or Yard – will be decided by a specially selected panel who will also choose the winner which will be announced later this month.

David Pringle, at NOMA, and a member of the selection panel, said: “NOMA is an area with a rich and vibrant heritage, and we wanted the people who live, work and enjoy themselves here to become a part of its future so we have been delighted with the response.

“There have been many examples of crowd sourcing and crowd funding but this is crowd naming.

“Each suggestion has its merits and so it will be very difficult to choose the winner which will create a piece of Manchester history.”

The people who suggested each of the shortlisted names will enjoy
afternoon tea and ‘bubbles’ for two at Teacup Kitchen in the Northern Quarter. Where more than one person has submitted the shortlisted name, a winner will be drawn.

The new public square is part funded by The European Regional Development Fund and is being delivered in partnership with Manchester City Council.
