Award-winning inventor tackles insomnia
AWARD-winning medical device inventor and entrepreneur Richard Mills has launched a new venture.
Mills, whose Cheshire-based Swellaway invention received investment from Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney, and also won the 2015 North West Innovator award at the North West Masters Awards, has launched SleepCogni.
The entrepreneur is looking for a £70,000 investment through funding site Kickstarter and has already received 39 pledges totalling £6,004.
Aimed at insomniacs, SleepCogni is a bedside sleep device, backed by Sheffield Hallam University and founder of the London Sleep Centre, Dr Irshaad Ebrahim.
The non-invasive device monitors heart rate, mental alertness, skin temperature and movement and produces a programme to help induce sleep.
Mills said: “I became convinced it wasn’t just the hour before bed that explained why I couldn’t fall asleep, it was the whole modern lifestyle, the stress and over-stimulus in daily life is contributing to the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. SleepCogni has proved successful in clinical trials and endorsed by those who have seen it in action.”
Nominations are now open for the 2015 North West Business Masters Awards, in association with Convex Capital.
As well as innovation, the Masters Awards will recognise excellence in: manufacturing, export, fast growth, professional services, being a good employer, supporting local communities and listed company performance.
Outstanding leadership, vision and contribution to North West business will also be recognised with the prestigious North West Ambassador Award. Previous winners include leading businessmen Norman Stoller, Fred Done and Neville Richardson.

Around 500 people are expected to attend the awards on March 10 at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, which will begin with cocktails and culminate in a post-event party.
