Law firm looking for new city offices

NATIONAL law firm Browne Jacobson has ambitious plans for Manchester, and is eyeing up new premises to accommodate a growing headcount.

The Nottingham-based firm, which entered the top 50 rankings for the first time last year, has just announced its turnover for the 2015/16 financial year at £64m, a 9% increase on the previous year. It has seen its turnover grow by 26% in the last two years alone.

On the back of this year’s results, the firm, which has 109 partners, 442 lawyers and an overall headcount of 823, has also announced a 5.5 % award to employees as part of its annual performance award scheme.

Browne Jacobson opened its Manchester office in 2012, and has 28 staff at 3 Piccadilly Place today – new arrivals in the last year include Kerren Daly (Employment) and Rebecca Fitzpatrick (Health).

Sarah Walker-Smith, chief operating officer, told TheBusinessDesk that the firm is committed to expanding its footprint in Manchester and that it is looking for new offices that will give it capacity to expand.

She said: “We haven’t set ourselves any targets but when we opened in Birmingham back in 1999 we grew to 100 strong within 10 years. We have ambitious plans to grow our Manchester operation by adding new service and sector lines so there is no reason why we can’t reach similar levels in the North West.

“We are currently exploring a number of city centre options which will cater for this expected growth and offer a contemporary and dynamic working environment for our people and our clients.”

It is expected that a decision will be made within the next six months.
