Building collapse fears force continued closure of city street

SAFETY fears have yet again delayed the reopening of part of Lime Street in Liverpool because of the dangerous condition of the derelict former Futurist Cinema.

Structural experts say the risk of the building collapsing has not yet been eliminated due to the complex nature of the building. The section of Lime Street where it stands will now remain closed until Monday 6.

Liverpool City Council had already delayed the reopening until yesterday (Tuesday, May 31), but says continued closure is necessary for public safety.

The closure is from Skelhorne Street to Copperas Hill with pedestrian access maintained on the side of Lime Street opposite the Futurist.

A council spokesman said: “We thank motorists and commuters for their ongoing patience while work takes place to make the façade of The Futurist safe.”
