Logistics firm plans continental growth ‘despite Brexit’

THE boss of Bootle-based Abbey Logistics says he is sticking to growth plans in Continental Europe, despite Brexit.
The business has just bought ten ISO tank containers to add to its existing fleet of bulk intermodal silos, which transport foodstuffs from France to the UK.
Established in 1990, Abbey Logistics provides bulk tankers, freight, and warehousing facilities across the UK and Europe.
Since starting on its growth strategy in 2009, Abbey has expanded from £18m turnover to £45m according to its latest set of accounts to June 2015, some £5m ahead of its forecast turnover. By 2020, the company aims to increase its turnover to £70m.
Part of its growth has come as a result of growing its volumes with customers based in Continental Europe and the group has ambitious plans to continue this growth.
Steve Granite, managing director at Abbey, said: “Continental Europe has long been a market place we planned to grow into and despite Brexit, we are still confident that with our existing and new clients we can increase our share of the Europe-UK market.
“The latest delivery of ISO tank containers will enable us to operate more efficiently versus driver accompanied road tank solutions, allowing us to grow our market share. We strongly expect to be increasing our intermodal container fleet over the coming years as we become more competitive in this market and win new business.”
Abbey employs around 480staff and operates a fleet of 275 vehicles and 430 trailers across its three divisions.
