£10m gas mains contract for company

SALFORD-based GPL Group has been appointed to a high profile framework for gas mains replacement works in the south of England for SGN.

The project is worth £10m to the company, each year for the next five years.

The utilities division of GPL has been awarded a place on SGN’s five-year framework and is tasked with replacing a minimum of 60km of gas mains replacement per year across the Oxford and Reading area, as SGN upgrades its existing gas network to the region.

SGN manages and distributes natural and green gas to 5.9 million homes and businesses across Scotland and the south of England.

It is currently working on a 30-year programme to replace all its metal pipes within 30 metres of property with new plastic pipes.

The plastic pipes are more flexible and robust and if left undisturbed will last for decades, ensuring a continued safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

This is a high profile project in the region and customer service along with health and safety are of paramount importance. GPL has proven excellence in these areas and, recognised by SGN, will help to deliver the replacement gas network.

Tracey McIntyre, SGN’s head of operations said: “Replacing our gas infrastructure in a safe and efficiently, whilst maintaining excellent customer service levels through good communication is a key deliverable to SGN. We only work with partners that can help us to ensure we employ the highest safety standards and strive for the best levels of service.

“GPL is one such partner and we have been very impressed with GPL’s management team and their professional mobilisation of the contract.”

Peter Vevers, utilities contracts manager at GPL Group said: “The company’s extensive experience and commitment to safety when delivering installation and maintenance projects in the gas mains arena, means we are now securing work nationwide with the blue chip clients.”
