Constructor is top of class after schools rebuild handover

CONSTRUCTION and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall has handed over the latest batch of schools being rebuilt under the Education Fundaing Agency’s Priority School Building Programme.

The four completed schools – worth a combined total of £27m – include Blacon High School in Chester, Plymouth Grove Primary School in Manchester, Dee Point Primary School in Chester and Bedford Drive Primary School on the Wirral.

They form part of the PSBP North West batch, a total of 12 schools in Blackpool, Chester, Wigan, Manchester, Stockport and Merseyside, awarded to a Morgan Sindall Investments/Equitix consortium in August 2014.

Morgan Sindall managing director in the North, Andy Hall, attended the official opening ceremony of Blacon High Schoo, along with EFA’s Sara Humber and the deputy Lord Mayor of Chester, Razia Daniels.

Opening ceremonies for the other schools will take place over the next few weeks.

Hall said: “We’re incredibly proud to be delivering these schools as part of the PSBP programme and pleased to handover this latest batch on schedule and ready for the start of the new school year.

“Both pupils and teachers will enjoy the kind of modern, fit-for-purpose learning environments that Morgan Sindall has established a reputation for designing and building.”

MSIL/Equitix’s North West general manager Gary Naylor said: “We are delighted to have delivered these next four schools in the NW Batch on programme and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the EFA to deliver the remaining five schools currently in construction.”

Through the national PSBP programme, 261 schools will be rebuilt or have their condition needs met by the EFA, the first of which was completed in 2014. All schools within the programme will be delivered by the end of 2018.

Across the programme, each new school will be built on land within the existing school boundary allowing the school to remain operational during construction of the new buildings.

Once complete, the school will move into the new teaching facilities while the old buildings are demolished and external landscaping works are completed.

The latest handover takes the total number of successfully delivered PSBP schools in the North West Batch to seven with Bridge Hall Primary School in Stockport, JH Godwin Primary School in Chester and Halebank Primary School in Halton all being handed over earlier this year.
