Transformation of old GUS offices to school campus complete

PRESTON-based Conlon Construction has completed the refurbishment of the former GUS offices in the city, creating a state-of-the-art campus for Tauheedul Education Trust.

Commissioned through the Education Funding Agency (EFA) Regional Contractors Framework, the scheme to build a permanent site for Eden Boys’ School, Preston involved a full refurbishment of the existing four-storey building, including remodelling of the interior to reflect the change of use with classrooms, an IT suite, social spaces and new toilet facilities.

Conlon Construction also demolished an existing three-storey area of the original structure, replacing it with a double height sports hall.

Structural alterations were carried out to remodel the internal space, upgrade the lift and modify the building for Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance.  The scheme also included strip out and replacement of all mechanical and electrical services.

Key to the transformation of the building was encapsulation of the existing exterior to refresh all façades.

Preston-based glazing subcontractor, A W Glazing (AWG) installed a curtain walling system with coloured glass in varying shades of anthracite, creating an eye catching design on the school’s exterior.

In addition, more than 700 opening windows were installed as part of the glazing project along with a number of ribbon windows and automatic doors.

Conlon also carried out associated external works, including upgrading of tarmacked surfaces, creation of a hardstanding multi-use games area pitch, car parking and drop off areas.

Conlon Construction worked closely with AWG and the project’s architects, Chester-based Lovelock Mitchell, to aid the design and delivery of the scheme.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “This was a challenging project involving a restricted city centre site and a critical deadline, which will be met despite modifications to the project during the programme.

“Our experience of both refurbishment projects and education schemes enabled us to manage project delivery effectively, working with our established supply chain to complete a stunning transformation.”

Principal, Alyson Middlemass, concluded: “Eden Boys’ School, Preston, is built on a mission of educational excellence, character development and service to communities and provides its pupils with a wealth of enrichment opportunities through its leadership specialism.”
