Blueprint for 2,000-home scheme in Wigan to go on show

PLANS for 2,000 family on a 280-acre brownfield site near Wigan are to on public view in the town.

Wigan Council and Peel Land & Property are bidding to deliver the homes, 30 acres of employment land and a new east-west link road south of Hindley.

There would also be 100 acres of open space including play areas and sports pitches.

Peel and the council are preparing an outline planning application for the development, which was allocated for development in Wigan Council’s Local Plan Core Strategy in 2013.

As part of the planning process consultation sessions are being held in the local community so residents can learn more and have their say on the proposals.

Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This proposal will provide much needed new family homes and jobs and is the largest new housing site in the borough. It will take many years to be built out.

“It is important that local residents look at the proposals and the master plan and let us have their views. This is a real opportunity for local residents to help shape this development, and I would urge them to visit the exhibitions and let us know what they think.”

The proposed new road through the site will connect the A58 Liverpool Road and the A578 Leigh Road at its junction with the North Leigh development site.

This forms part of a series of interlinked roads to connect M58 J26 (M6), to the A579 Atherleigh Way which are part of Wigan Council’s transport strategy.

The local environment will be improved with new connections and accessibility to the countryside to the south and west as part of the wider Greenheart countryside park.

There will be new areas for sport and play with improvements to Leyland Park.

Sustainable drainage will protect against flooding and maintain and enhance wildlife habitats and provide natural green corridors between them.

Walking, cycling and sustainable transport is also a key part of the plan with improvements to footpaths, cycle tracks and public transport.

The consultation events take place on: Wednesday October 19, 1pm – 7pm, at AFC Hindley Juniors, 151 Park Road, Hindley; Tuesday October 25, 1pm – 7pm, Hindley Community Association, Tudor House, 8 Liverpool Road, Hindley; Wednesday October 26, 1pm – 7pm, Hindley Green Family Church at Bethel, Atherton Road, Hindley Green.
