Your top 10 stories of 2016: Never mind Brexit and Trump, collapse of crane hire business got the biggest audience

IT’S been a 2016 full of surprises – a year in which our esteemed business and political commentators got it all wrong.

They thought we’d stay in the EU, but we’re coming out, thanks to that Brexit vote on June 23, and ‘over the pond’ the man with possibly the worst hairstyle in history, Donald Trump, has been elected leader of the free world.

Here in the North West, however, things have been a little more predictable with the bad news garnering the most reads from our audience during 2016.

The story you most clicked on was about the demise of cash-strapped heavy machine rental specialist Hewden, based in Stretford, Greater Manchester, which went into administration with the loss of 251 jobs in late November.

And don’t you just love it when one of you gets into legal hot water. Number two proved to be the piece we published in February when corporate financier Richard Hughes – co-founder of Zeus Capital – appeared in crown court – to face allegations of tax fraud.

Number three was the failure of Wrexham bus and coach company GHA Coaches Ltd, which went into administration.

Further down the top 10 list are some more uplifting stories, not least a glimpse at a restaurant’s spectacular rooftop location.
