German film fest coming to city

A film festival celebrating the very best in German filmmaking is set to take place in Manchester later this month.

Manchester Film Weekender is taking place from Friday March 17 to Sunday  March 19 at the Chancellors Hotel and will show classic German films to a local audience, with a range of discussions and Q&A’s to take part in too.

The weekend will trace the work of film makers who left Germany pre-WW2 and made careers in Hollywood. The films shown will concentrate on the work that they did in Germany before leaving the country.

Manchester Film WeekendThe event is being led by guest speaker Maggie Hoffgen, who was born in Germany and has since taught at the BFI Film Academy and The University of Salford.

Organiser of the event John Grieve, who also works at Manchester and Salford Film Society,

“We are showing films that wouldn’t normally be seen and looking at things in a bit more depth. By having our Q&A sessions and discussions, we are aiming to provide people with a different way of looking at film.

Manchester Film Weekend“I have always been interested in German films and so far, the event is proving quite popular. Events like this tend to obviously attract film lovers, but the festival will allow them to see the films in a different way and gain a better understanding of production.”

Eight German films in total will be shown, including The Oyster Princess (1919), Asphalt (1929), The Blue Angel (1930), M (1931), People on Sunday (1929), 1,2,3 (1961) and A Time to Love and A Time to Die (1959).

The festival will kick off at 4pm on Friday March 17 and will end at 4pm on Sunday March 19. Booking for the festival is essential.
