Region counts cost of Woolies demise

MORE than 2,300 people in the North West will be out of work in two weeks after the collapse of High Street retailer Woolworths.

Figures released by administrator Deloitte reveals that Lancashire will feel the pain more than other parts of the region, with 676 jobs being lost at 21 stores.

In Merseyside 563 posts are affected, in Cheshire 503. Cumbria 266, Manchester 271 and Flintshire 92.

The figures relate only to store employees and do not include 80 staff at a support site in Castleton, Rochdale who were made redundant in the first week of this month.

Woolworths, which has 815 stores, went into administration in late November after struggling under the weight of £385m of debt and being hit by the consumer downturn and competition from online and supermarket retailers.

All the stores will close by January 5 after administrators Deloitte were unable to  find a buyer.
