Woolworths job losses toll hits 3,000

NEARLY 3,000 people in the North West will have been made redundant as a result of the collapse of Woolworths, it emerged today.

Yesterday it emerged that 2,371 shop staff would lose their jobs by January 5, and today administrators Deloitte said 225 people would be made redundant at the stricken company’s distribution hub in Rochdale by the end of the month.

A further 375 jobs will go at the retailer’s head office function, also in Rochdale, which will close at the end of January.

The High Street stalwart was unable to find a buyer since going into administration last month, and will now close down. It had 800 stores employing more than 25,000 people.

Woolworths is not expected to be the last high profile retail casualty of the recession.

This week insolvency firm Begbies Traynor said it expected at least 10 chains to go bust in the next month.
