Pochin to build £7.8m hospital family centre

CHESHIRE-based Pochin Construction has won a £7.8m contract to build a new centre for parents of sick children being treated at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The Ronald McDonald House charity is funding the 60-bedroom, five-storey ‘home from home’ facility. The Manchester building will be the 15th opened by Ronald McDonald House in the UK.
Designed by Manchester-based AEW Architects the facility is next-door to the new children’s hospital.
Steve Burne, managing director of AEW Architects, said: “We have worked for a number of years with Ronald McDonald House Charities to create an identity and an environment that helps this amazing charity provide support to families with children in hospital.
“The fact that Pochin has secured the construction contract is great news, as I know from experience that our requirement for the highest standards in quality
and delivery will be met.”
Work will begin early next month and is due for completion at the end of 2011.
Jonathan Pochin, managing director at Pochin Construction, says: “This is a highly prestigious contract. The work that Ronald McDonald House Charities does to enable its Houses to be built and maintained is fantastic and we are very proud to be a part of the programme.
“We will use the construction phase to promote the Charity’s work and we will also put our weight behind fundraising wherever possible.”
The steel frame building will be clad in a James and Taylor Rainscreen system, incorporating a large cantilever feature canopy, from roof level over the front elevation.
