Chester appoints BDP as masterplanner

LIVERPOOL architect BDP has been appointed to handle a major regeneration programme in Chester.

Chester City Council has hired the firm to provide masterplanning and architecture services for Chester Renaissance, a 10-year £1.5bn investment in the city.

The masterplan will provide a vision and framework for the regeneration of three of the city’s most significant areas – the cathedral, the historic retail area The Rows, and Chester Castle.

The work is being part-funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and English Heritage.

BDP said it collaborated with leading consultants during the bid process including Knight Frank, JMP, Redhouse Consultants and Oxford Archaeology North, all of whom will now form the master plan team.

BDP architect Rob Shackleton said: “This is an incredible project for the team and an exciting opportunity to work alongside Chester Renaissance, Chester City Council and Chester Cathedral during an important period in the city’s re-development.

“The significance of this project cannot be underestimated with regards to the long term future and improved success of Chester, and we believe this will guide the city towards becoming one of the most outstanding visitor destinations in Europe.”
