Liverpool One wins planning accolade

LIVERPOOL ONE – the city centre’s new £1bn shopping centre – has won a major planning award.
It has received the Royal Town Planning Institute national award for best city or metropolitan scheme, with judges commenting that it has already begun to transform the fortunes of the city centre.
Judges also praising the speed with which such a major scheme went through the planning process.
“Never let it be said that the planning system is incapable of delivering big projects in a reasonable time and to a high standard. With a professional approach, a quality product, and a partnership mentality – we have seen proof that it is possible,” judges said.
The development’s design was also lauded, referencing the way the shopping area links to the waterfront and other areas that are undergoing regeneration.
“Previously the journey from the centre to the Albert Dock and other waterfront areas seemed long, unattractive and daunting; but now the route is clear, direct and extremely appealing,” judges said.
The scheme was submitted for the award by Liverpool City Council. Cllr Peter Millea, executive member for assets and development, said: “This accolade is an acknowledgement not only of the quality of the design and architecture of Liverpool One but the way in which this massively complex scheme has been handled and delivered. The judges were particularly impressed with the partnership approach and we are delighted that it has won one of the top national honours.”
