£12m Mere golf hotel approved

A £12m 86-bedroom hotel in Cheshire has been given the green light.

The Government Office North West has decided not to refer the planning application from the owners of Mere Golf and Country Club to a public inquiry.

Macclesfield Council approved the plans in December and then referred it to the Government office, which has now backed the scheme – which has been in the pipeline for five years.

Mere Golf club owner Mark Boler, said the new facility would allow it to host major competitions, conferences, exhibitions and weddings.

He said: “I am delighted with the news, as it safeguards the long-term viability of our club for future generations.

“During the past years we have been disadvantaged by other corporate golf providers which have had the benefit of overnight accommodation on their premises.

“This puts us on a level playing field, and we will soon be able to offer our members and guests the very best facilities that a modern-day golf and country club can provide.”
