300 jobs to go at meat factory

SOME 300 jobs will be lost at a Wirral meat processing factory when the Danish owner shuts down the operation.

Danish Crown is closing its Tulip site at Bromborough, which prepares boiled and sliced cooked meats, along with two other facilites in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.

The group saw net profits dive 19% in the year to September 30 and made 1,600 staff redundant across the business.

In a statement released in January the company vice president Carsten Jakobsen said: “We must look to the future and currently focus on reducing costs and by closing the sites in question, we will achieve considerable efficiency savings”

Union Unite said it had presented alternatives to the company and Wirral South MP Ben Chapman said he was disappointed with the decision which comes after a 90-day consultation with staff.

Tulip was formed in 2004 when Danish Crown’s UK susidiary Tulip Ltd combined with Flagship Foods to create the UK’s second largest pork meat supplier.

It has sales of around £1bn and employed more than 7,000 across 21 sites.
