Co-op members pull a £15m Christmas cracker

The Co-op will hand a multi-million pound giveaway to its members as they cash in and cut the cost of Christmas following the launch of the Co-op’s new membership scheme at the end of September.
The community retailer expects consumers to have earned more than £15M through its new membership scheme by the end of the month. Shoppers receive a 5% reward when they purchase own-branded products and services, and are expected to use this in the run up to Christmas.
An additional 1% is donated to local good causes under the scheme with more than 4,000 community groups UK-wide currently benefitting.
A member spending £40 per week on own-branded groceries would earn over £100 in a year, and see more than £20 go directly to local causes to make a difference in the community.
Steve Murrells, Retail Chief Executive, Co-op, said: “Millions of pounds will be divvied-up between shoppers and good causes. Members will save money by using their rewards to contribute to the cost of Christmas. And shoppers aren’t the only ones who benefit as local community groups also receive a Christmas cheer as the reward scheme ensures they get a share.
“Good food really can do good with around £3M raised by the end of the year to provide a funding boost for over 4,000 local causes.”
The new Co-op Membership cards feature the Co-op’s iconic ‘clover-leaf’ design – first used in the 1960’s and linking to a time when people really understood how they could be co-owners of their Co-op, and how a strong Co-op could help to create strong communities.
Rewards accumulated can be spent instantly rather than waiting for vouchers, or accumulated to contribute to the cost of a special occasion. For further information pop into your local Co-op or visit coop.co.uk/membership
