‘If you think HR is a headache, try writing a book’ say experts

Two Northwich-based HR experts who temporarily swapped the boardroom for the writer’s desk say they are happy to get back to the day job as they took delivery of the final printed copies of their debut work.

Graham Whiley and Jane Caven founded HR firm Sagegreen HR in 2000 and run the business from their Cheshire HQ, alongside area offices across the UK.

Their book, a ‘Employment Law is NOT for the convenience of employers’ is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at the ever changing world of HR as experienced by the business owners over many years.

It is now available on Amazon after what Graham and Jane describe as a journey of many challenges, triumphs and a fair few tribulations along the way.

‘There is the classic saying that everyone has a book inside them,’ explains Graham, ‘but what few people tell you is just what hard work it is. Honestly, if you thought HR can be a headache, try writing a book!

‘This isn’t a typical how-to guide, or management manual. What we wanted to create was a mildly humorous recollection of some of our experiences over the years, in a format that assures employers, managers and business owners that they are not alone.’

Graham and Jane spent many months on the book, perfecting the content, the style, editing and re-editing, commissioning cartoonists for illustrations and garnering feedback from their team at Sagegreen and clients.

Jane Caven comments;

‘Employment Law and HR generally can be challenging for all of us and we wanted to shed a little light on the subject but with a sense of humour. HR is a very serious subject and often it needs to be but we mustn’t lose sight of the human in Human Resources.

‘Whatever the advances in technology and automation, people ultimately want to discuss their challenges with other people who understand them and have a working relationship with them. Rapport is essential in building that trust and that comes from being open, honest and above all, human. Hopefully with this book we might challenge a few stereotypes about the industry as well as bringing a knowing smile to the faces of our readers.’
