Fifth-generation manufacturer snapped up by glass group

The family-run Cornwall Group has acquired the Midlands’ largest independent toughened glass manufacturer.

Based in Birmingham, Forward Glass employs more than 100 staff and turns over in excess of £10m. The deal enables the former owner and managing director, Mark Weston Smith to retire.

It’s been picked up by Cornwall Group, a family-run business with origins that started in Truro, Cornwall more than 45 years ago. It operates a range of businesses including Mackenzie Glass and Cornwall Glass, with Forward Glass adding to the group’s glass national footprint and offering.

Forward Glass were supported on the deal by Springboard Corporate Finance managing partner Simon Ward, assistant director Thomas Hammond and manager, James Cross.

Mark Weston Smith, owner and MD of Forward Glass said: “Springboard provided excellent support and advice on every element of the sale of my business.

“Having worked in the glass industry for the majority of my professional career the wise counsel and guidance of Springboard on any aspect of the process was totally invaluable.  They were always available at a moment’s notice to give help and assistance.”

Ward commented: “We are delighted to have supported Mark Weston Smith on the sale of Forward Glass. Finding the right strategic home for a fifth-generation family business was a real challenge that we are glad to have delivered upon.  Mark had built an excellent business and we wish him a well-deserved retirement.”
