Shared ownership scheme to launch in Bristol this spring

Bristol homeowners are set to benefit from a boost of affordable new homes this spring, with the forthcoming launch of a new scheme.

Abri Home’s Shared Ownership apartments at the historic old Ashton Gate Brewery site on North Street in Southville are to become available.

Abri Homes is gearing up to launch its collection of 107 one, two and three-bedroom affordable apartments to market with prices starting from £89,250 for a 35% share.

Around 100 homes will be available with shared ownership and 9 for social rent, supported by grant funding from Homes England.

The new development has seen the complete transformation of the former brewery into a range of contemporary and energy-efficient homes nestled in the heart of Southville, which has been named one of the best places to live in the South West.

As well as offering residential living, The Old Brewery will bring new commercial spaces to the area, with plans for local businesses to open their doors in early 2025, adding to the thriving independent retail offerings on North Street.

Stuart Hensby, Sales & Marketing Director at Abri, said: “This spring we are excited to offer Bristol buyers the opportunity to secure one of the first homes at The Old Brewery. We hear too often that first time buyers are struggling with mortgage rates and unmanageable deposits, and the booming Bristol market poses its own challenges for aspiring homeowners. At The Old Brewery buyers will be able to buy their first home with as little as a 5% deposit and make the most of shared ownership – which allows them to move away from the private rental market and take a smaller first step onto the property ladder.

“The Old Brewery will offer residents the best in modern living. It is a great example of reusing the best of the old, as well as creating something entirely new, and showcases the fantastic potential of mixed-use spaces. Highly energy efficient, these new homes will also allow residents to enjoy lower utility bills.”

Shared Ownership is a scheme designed to help aspiring homeowners by enabling them to purchase between a 10% and 75% share of a property, while paying a low-cost rent to Abri on the remaining amount.

With a minimum of just a 5% deposit required, this means that potential buyers at The Old Brewery could step onto the housing ladder for as little as £4,462.50 for a 35% share.

Ideally located off Bristol’s North Street, the area is known for its range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, with weekly farmers markets and the Tobacco Factory Theatre on the doorstep.
