Family-owned Cornish Bakery expands portfolio as its success continues to rise

An independent, family-owned Cornish bakery is expanding its portfolio to support a growing demand for its home-baked bread, savoury and sweet favourites, with a six-figure funding package.

Nile’s Bakery has opened a purpose built 8000 sq. ft. baking facility on newly acquired land at St Austell Enterprise Park with the backing of a loan from Barclays Bank.

This included installing new energy efficient machinery such as ovens and freezers.

Established in 1955, by Leslie Nile and his wife Chrissie, the business continues to build on its success and is now run by third and fourth generation family members.

The firm currently employs over 100 full and part-time staff from the local area across six shops and three cafés, located in St Austell, Fowey, and Newquay.

In total, thousands of products using locally sourced goods such as eggs, meat and potatoes, are made for its shops and cafés per week.

In addition to its own retail outlets, the business supplies home baked pasties, sausage rolls, cake breads and confectionary to wholesale customers, including local farm shops and the hotel sector.

Chris Nile, of Nile’s Bakery, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to grow the family business by opening our latest bakery shop and cafe with an amazing view allowing us to continue to provide quality products for our loyal customers.  This investment will help us to secure our future, and that of our hard-working employees, and we look forward to continuing to create delicious products at an affordable price to be enjoyed by all.”

Local MP, Steve Double for St Austell and Newquay, who was on hand to officially launch the new bakery, said: “It’s great to see one of our local family businesses expanding with the opening of this new modern bakery and cafe.

“This significant investment in our local economy will create and secure jobs for local people and support local businesses in the supply chain.  Well done to everyone involved in making this happen and especially to the Nile family for their work and dedication over many decades. As someone who lives locally, it was good to go along and support them with one of their famous pasties.”

Mark Heller, Barclays Business Manager, Cornwall, said, “It’s essential that we continue to support family businesses such as Nile’s Bakery which are so important to local communities.

“By really understanding the sector and the individuals involved, we have been able to create a funding package to enable the business to meet their growth ambitions, and we wish them every success in the future.”
