Independent Cornish coffee company named as one of the fastest growing firms in UK

An independent speciality coffee roaster based in Cornwall has been included in a last of the fastest growing private companies in the UK.

Origin Coffee has been named as a top 100 fastest growing, founder-led private company, alongside businesses including Lucy & Yak, Passenger, Astrid & Miyu, and Me + Em.

The company Origin is just one of two businesses from Cornwall to join the ranks.

The coffee roaster has been recognised for its significant sales, revenue, and profit against a backdrop of unprecedented economic challenges.

The Growth 100 annual list celebrates those who are thriving as some of the fastest-growing brands in the country.

To make the FEBE (For Entrepreneurs, by Entrepreneurs) list, businesses must have sales between £3m and £200m, have traded for at least three years, and have turned an operating profit in the last financial year.

The business must also be privately owned, with an active founder or founders.

Launched in 2004 by owner and founder, Tom Sobey, the B Corp accredited business is headquartered in Porthleven with six coffee shops, a world-class coffee programme, and hundreds of wholesale customers across the UK and Europe.

In 2022, Origin was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

“From a sales perspective, the last 12 months at Origin have been incredible,” said Tom Sobey.

“No small feat, considering the challenges we’re all facing on a global scale, the knock-on effects of a global pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and numerous other issues affecting producer partners in their own countries have made the last year one of the toughest to navigate since starting Origin.

“I am incredibly proud of the way that every single person at Origin has adapted to the challenges we face, and I look forward to continuing to grow.”

The FEBE Growth 100 list showcases entrepreneurial success throughout the UK. Businesses in London accounted for 26 of the final 100; the South East is represented through 13; Yorkshire joined in with 11; and Scotland celebrates 9, and the East Midlands with 8.

The ultimate ranking of 100 was data-driven, with companies rated by compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in sales over the last three financial years. Businesses were initially selected by either nominating themselves or through FEBE contacting them directly, as well as by accessing publicly available financial information.
