Future leadership programme launches in Birmingham

FORTY talented 19-25 year olds are being recruited to a new leadership programme in Birmingham.

Over the course of 12 months, participants in ‘UpRising’ will receive training from journalists, politicians and activists and also run their own community campaigns.

The programme is designed to challenge the privilege of birth and create future leaders in politics and public life by developing the next generation of public leaders in Birmingham.

It recruits young people from diverse backgrounds and aims to equip them with the skills and experience to become the leaders of tomorrow.

The programme was launched by Geoff Mulgan, chief executive of the Young Foundation which organises the scheme.

Chair of the UpRising steering group Waheed Saleem said: “This unique leadership programme has been supported by a range of organisations who value the importance of ensuring the future leadership of the city reflects the diverse population.

“We want the ‘UpRisers’ to take up the mantle to make the city a global player.

“We want to harness the great energy and enthusiasm of Birmingham young people to make a real and lasting difference to the city.”

Recent UpRising graduate Farah Mohammoud added: “There are so many passionate, talented people around who are desperate to make a difference, but don’t have the networks, or the connections to get into positions of power.

“The project that I am working on focuses on youth aspirations and positive role models.”
