Lawyers box clever for charity in memory of colleague

BARRISTERS, solicitors – and even some of their clients –  are preparing to enter the boxing ring for a charity event organised  by Birmingham’s No5 Chambers.

The amateur boxers will compete for the Ralph Lewis QC Memorial Cup to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care at a black tie charity event  in July.

Tony McDaid, practice director at No5 Chambers, said: “We anticipate a stable of 40 boxers in total, who will undergo a six-month fitness and boxing training programme.

“This long, hard road will see boxers matched on skill and fitness, leading to the headline event at The Burlington Hotel in New Street on Friday 8th July, where the fighters will slug it out in several bouts, each of 3 two-minute-rounds.  The boxer scoring the most points will be awarded the Ralph Lewis QC Memorial Cup and all fighters will win the respect of their ringside peers.”

Former Head of No5 Chambers, Ralph Lewis QC, was a promising boxer while at Oxford University and it remained one of his twin sporting loves, the other being Welsh Rugby.  He died in July 2010 within eight weeks of being diagnosed with cancer.  His friends and colleagues at No5 Chambers decided that a charity boxing event would be a fitting memorial, with all proceeds going to Marie Curie.

For further details on this event, including booking a table, buying tickets, volunteering to box, donating a prize for the charity raffle and auction, or to make a donation to Marie Curie call the No5 Chambers marketing team on 0845 210 5555.
