Business women urged to seek the limelight

BUSINESSWOMEN should step into the limelight and take the credit they deserve for their achievements, according to the organiser of the region’s top awards scheme for women in business.

Judy Groves, awards chair of the Vitalise Businesswoman of the Year initiative, said: “We’re trying to highlight the tremendous achievements of women in business, to try to acknowledge and recognise what they do, because they’re often incredibly shy and modest.”

Ms Groves, who is group marketing director for SCH, the international technology group owned by Sir Peter Rigby, added: “More importantly, it’s to encourage other women, by showing them what success is and persuading them they can aspire to achieve too. It’s our mission to share success.”

Last year’s winner was Suzie Norton, chief executive of Screen West Midlands, and runner-up was Fiona Toye, of historic badge and regalia maker Toye, Kenning and Spencer, based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Speaking at a reception at the faftory to launch the awards, Ms Toye said she was keen to encourage nominations from across the wider business community so that local businesswomen, creative leaders and key decision makers can also enjoy the benefits that the process brings.

The awards for 2011 will take place at a gala lunch on Friday October 14. More details of the awards, including nomination forms, will be available shortly on the women of the year website.
